Monument to Lithuanian partisans

Sculptures and monuments

During the partisan war, 1944–1953, Lithuanian partisans from Kupiškis area who were killed by hostile repressive structures were buried around Lake Varležeris. Sometimes the bodies of partisans were simply thrown into the lake itself. According to witnesses, human bones were found throughout this territory during the construction of houses and garages.

The remains of 6 unidentified partisans (1 woman and 5 men) were found during the construction of a water supply in Ežerėlio Street in 1990, and were exhumed in 1991. During archaeological research, it was determined that these were the remains of people aged 25-35, buried in an area of 130 x 80 cm, stacked one on top of the other with their faces up. A religious medallion was found next to them. During the construction of a water supply, in 1997, the remains of another partisan were found and exhumed. The found partisan remains were buried in the Kupiškis cemetery.

The number and identities of other partisans who died and were murdered in these pits during the partisan war have not been revealed.
