Freedom fights in Kupiškis region began in the summer of 1944 and lasted until 1953, when the headquarters of partisan military districts were destroyed and individual partisans remained. The Algimantas partisan military district operated in Kupiškis region. The second commander of the Algimantas partisan military district – Antanas Starkus (pseudonyms Blinda, Montė) was born in Zubiškiai (Vairiškiai), Kupiškis district. There are more than 30 places of honor to Lithuanian freedom fighters in Kupiškis district. Some of them are included into the Registry of Cultural Property. Partisans did not liberate Lithuania, but they defended its honor.
