Stirniškiai Mound

Mounds

The mound dates back from the 1st millennium to the beginning of the 2nd millennium. It is located in the village of Stirniškiai, to the north of the highway Daugpilis-Kupiškis-Panevėžys, just before it descends into the valley of the Pilpis stream, not far from the confluence of Lėvuo and Pilpis. To the east-southeast and north of the mound, an ancient foothill settlement was found, where smooth and rough pottery was discovered. 300 m northwest of the mound, the Skverbai burial mound was discovered, dating back to the III-V centuries. The mound was explored by archaeologists of the Council for the Scientific Methodical Protection of Cultural Monuments in 1968, and by Institute of History in 1969. The finds are kept in Kupiškis Ethnographic Museum and in the National Museum of Lithuania. The mound was included in the Register of Cultural Property in 1997, declared a cultural monument in 1998, and recognized as protected by the state in 2005.
